Zohran Mamdani states he will live in the storied Gracie Mansion
NYC's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the iconic Gracie Mansion, departing from his rent-controlled apartment that became a focal point during his election bid.
A Historic Residence
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors after the mid-20th century.
However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a key policy, did not confirm he would live there immediately after his triumph in November.
"This decision rested on the security of my family and the need to focusing all of my focus on enacting the platform on affordability New Yorkers voted for," Mamdani said in a statement.
Leaving Astoria
His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community known for its abundance of immigrant populations and international dining.
"To Astoria: thank you for showing us what is great about New York City," he noted.
"Even though I'm moving there, the community will always live inside me and my efforts as mayor," he affirmed.
Campaign Controversy
Throughout his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his key pledge – to freeze the rent – to his circumstances as a tenant.
Yet his opponents, including one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit although he came from a well-known family.
Previous Exceptions
Some mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side during his time in office, which concluded in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg felt it should be a place for official events, and advocated for significant upgrades of the historic mansion.
A Grand New Home
As he settles into Gracie Mansion for his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings far removed from his humble Astoria apartment.
Featuring pale yellow exterior, emerald shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.
Internally, the lower floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated in the spirit of the home's original era.
The estate, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.
Haunted History
A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care what people claim," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
The apartment he is leaving is under rent control, a policy where the city imposes caps on how much property owners can increase rent each year.
Tenants view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the price of rent rises faster than the average income.
It was reported Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
