Extreme heat and raging wildfires have swept through the parched landscape of Western Australia. As temperatures forecast to persist climbing above 40C (104F) over the next few days, a severe heatwave warning has been issued across much of the southwestern region.

This situation come after recent bushfires in New South Wales, which caused the destruction of homes and loss of life. Intense heatwave warnings have also been issued for the coming days in parts of SA and NSW, as a ridge of high pressure moves eastward, bringing intense sunshine to much of the area.

The mix of extremely dry vegetation and relentless heat presents a volatile situation for firefighters.

Worldwide Weather Extremes Trigger Disruption

In another part of the world, a metropolis was plunged into darkness last week after strong winds damaged the urban electrical network, with toppled trees bringing down electricity cables. The stormy weather also led to major transport delays at a key airport, where hundreds of flights were grounded. Substantial impact on power systems is anticipated to cause ongoing problems as utility companies work urgently to reconnect electricity to over 1 million inhabitants.

Unusual Fog Blankets Typically Clear Region

Meanwhile, a valley famed for its sunny weather and abundant sunlight has experienced one of its grayest and foggiest periods on record. A specific type of fog, which usually lasts for only a few days, has been remarkably extensive and long-lasting this year, holding temperatures at a key transport hub under 8C for over a week – the longest such streak in more than three decades. The prolonged fog has been driven by exceptional autumn rainfall that left soils waterlogged.

In addition to the snowfall, strong northerly winds swept across the archipelago, with wind gusts reaching 50mph recorded on multiple locations. The influence of the weather event is expected to diminish this week with more seasonal conditions returning.
