Users Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing these treatments must be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting generally have a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Users who have stopped the medication explain a intense resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced something flipping and you're instantly starving," said an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among women than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural support.
