The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Selected the Incorrect Critical Role Song

The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated series by Critical Role, unveiled a new opening credits. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while also hinting at several agonizing backstories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.

Overall, the intro looks amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the music selection.

This sequence uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition created by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the official score of that title, the second release put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a great nostalgic choice, and I believe that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.

Personally, The Mighty Nein's intro fails to capture the hype and excitement that was part of the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when cast member the performer wrote words to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.

Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. This track that excites you before you start an episode of adventurous fun.

The Mighty Nein's intro with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's an impressive piece of music, but from what I know of this party, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Of course, Critical Role has stated that the animated show will have a few changes and differences from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its intro seems to be among these.

This animated adventure will be released on Prime Video from November 19. For those eager before that, or want a head start to learn about the personas of the second series, the actual play are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
