A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has been granted a special invitation for the Australian Open, commencing on the 18th of January in the city of Melbourne.

Historic Comeback to the Australian Courts

The event organizers confirmed on Friday that the 45-year-old icon will make a return at Melbourne Park a staggering 28 years after her debut. During 1998, she overcame her younger sister Serena in the early stage before exiting in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Summer Swing

The tennis star had previously revealed in the month of November her plans to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she was likewise awarded a special entry, two weeks prior to the Australian Open. Organizers noted that Williams is scheduled to participate in Hobart, Australia a following week, immediately prior to the start of play at Melbourne Park.

Her last appearance in Melbourne was in the year 2021, and she has been a finalist in the women’s singles on two occasions, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 and 2017.

"I am thrilled to return in the country and eagerly anticipating playing during the Australian summer," Williams stated. "I’ve had so many incredible moments there, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to return to a place that has been so significant to my professional journey."

Williams' career statistics at the Australian Open stands at an impressive 54 wins and 21 losses. The upcoming edition will mark the twenty-second occasion she has competed in the primary tournament field.

Setting a New Record

Officials indicated that Williams is poised to be the most senior female player to compete in an Open's singles competition, eclipsing the record previously held by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she was defeated in the first round at Melbourne Park in 2015.
