The Latest Relaxed Game Mode Ignites Intense Discussions Regarding Bots, XP Rewards, and Queue Times

Recently, Battlefield Studios launched a new playlist called Casual Breakthrough. In essence, this option resembles the standard Breakthrough setup but includes a few key changes:

  • Every squad includes only 8 human participants, with the rest filled by 32 bots.
  • Actions done by human gamers award complete experience points, while AI activities provide lower rewards.
  • Only two maps can be played: Siege of Cairo and Empire State map.
  • Elements like Dogtags, achievements, and stat tracking are disabled.

In short, the playlist lives up to its name: it's a laid-back version of Breakthrough. At face value, one could assume it's a good idea, since it provides additional choices for gamers seeking different ways to have fun with the game. But, gaming history has shown one thing, it is that not everyone will be happy. In other words, a lot of BF6 fans are mad.

Player Responses: From Fury to Support

"Gamers prefer human opponents. Avoid making the errors of your competitors," reads a response to the mode reveal. "Absolutely shocking idea," says a different user. At the same time, on the Battlefield subreddit, a player notes, "It's unclear where we are going with this game," while another lists all the issues they consider to be broken in the game: "Fix bugs, address drone issues, fix IVF rockets, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, improve hit detection. We do not require this bot mode."

However, for every complaint, there are players explaining how much they're enjoying the recent addition. "It's very fun to warm up, real players prevent it from being a complete grind but it's very relaxed," reads one Reddit comment. "This subreddit fails to see that there are gamers who have lives and can't play this title all the time. Allow them to find a middle ground," states another. A response on Twitter explains that as they're "a parent gamer with limited time, this is perfect for me," while another applauds the mode for "avoiding intense competition."

Valid Criticisms and Player Input

All that said, players have constructive reasons to complain about Casual Breakthrough. Some users have highlighted that it will make wait times more extended for different playlists because of the large amount of playlists currently available. On a similar note, certain regions already encounter AI-filled matches in the current modes. Additionally, it appears somewhat counterintuitive that the mode does not begin without a minimum number of real players, despite it primarily centers on fighting AI opponents.

Finally, a major complaints is that Battlefield Portal was meant to provide complete rewards, including AI matches, but that got canned when they attempted to remove XP farming from the mode. So Casual Breakthrough feels like the community compromising in the middle, according to a Reddit comment. A different user describes this addition as the devs "dropping the ball so hard, I experienced so much fun in the initial release, what prompted them to change it?"

Looking Ahead: Will Changes Occur?

If the development team has demonstrated something so far with Battlefield 6, it is that they're paying attention and acting on feedback. Assignments that were overly hard got fixed rapidly, just like the specific battle pass objectives. It is likely that, if their data indicates this recent mode is underperforming to their standards, they won't be shy to make further modifications.
