The Fifth Toy Story Film Teaser Pits Woody and Buzz Versus a Digital Device
Exactly 30 anniversary after the first Toy Story movie was released, establishing Pixar as a leading animation studio and introducing viewers to beloved figures like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (the voice talent), who are now household names.
Coming in 2026, the next chapter is set to arrive. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, providing a brief look into the storyline but leaving fans wondering how it will address the conclusion of Toy Story 4.
The Latest Addition: A Frog-Shaped Tablet Spooks the Toys
The preview reveals Bonnie — who received the toy collection when he grew up — receiving a latest plaything, one that alarms Woody, Buzz, and the crew. She acquires her first tablet computer, and she is thrilled about it.
Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will come to life just like Bonnie's other toys. However, the characters seem to view it as a threat intending to supplant them, which it likely will.
Woody's Return: Mysteries from Toy Story 4
An element the trailer avoids is why Woody is back with his friends in the child's bedroom. The finale of Toy Story 4 depicted him set off on a new adventure with Bo Peep (Annie Potts), journeying with a carnival and helping prize toys find good homes.
Surely, the filmmakers will address the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the film. Witnessing him show up in the familiar setting without warning is a little strange, though. It also raises questions whether Bo Peep will have come back with Woody. And where is Duke Caboom (the star)?
Continuity from the Previous Film
Fortunately, some aspects are carrying over from the earlier movie. The final act the cowboy did before departing for his fresh path was pass his symbol of authority to Jessie (Joan Cusack), entrusting her in charge of the toy domain. In the teaser shows the badge pinned to her shirt.
Hopefully she is still the driving force among the toys.
Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on the scheduled date.
