The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Shares He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... Currently.

The creative mastermind never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would turn into a massive hit. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”

With the first season of the popular series coming to an end—and the next chapter greenlit and underway—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the viewer reception and whether it will influence the narrative path of Pluribus.

On the Tremendous Audience Reaction

One could easily to get sidetracked by the widespread acclaim and online debates surrounding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to avoid both.

“It feels like force fed something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”

In spite of his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it alter the course of the show.

“It is not our goal to change the plot,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not impacted by what people are saying.”

“We prefer to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan adds.

A Pressing Query: Does the creator Have a Plan for the Ending of Pluribus?

So if Gilligan and his team aren’t being guided by public opinion, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… with some caveats.

“We've developed some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to discard a solid concept for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I imagine we will be doing that.”

Alternatively, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.

“My recurring proposal is that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Of course, why mess with the iconic TV endings?

“I'd love for Carol to awaken beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus can be watched on the streaming service.
