Taliban Utilized Abandoned British Gear to Track Down Afghans That Served Alongside Allied Forces, Inquiry Hears

A confidential source has revealed a parliamentary probe that the UK left behind sensitive equipment permitting Afghanistan's rulers to locate Afghans that had served with allied troops.

Data Breach Endangers Numerous in Danger

The source, known as Person A, testified that individuals impacted by the data leak were advised to change residences and switch their contact details to ensure their safety from the Taliban.

MPs are looking into the UK government's management of a serious breach of personal details affecting approximately 19k individuals who had requested to move to the United Kingdom to escape the regime.

Data Disclosure Occurred

An electronic document with their personal data, such as names, contact details and in some cases family information, was accidentally leaked by a worker working at UK special forces headquarters in last year.

The incident came to light only in August 2023, when the names of nine people who had requested to settle in the UK were posted on online platforms.

Taliban Capabilities

Many believe there's a misunderstanding that Afghan rulers lack comparable resources that western nations possess,” the whistleblower testified to lawmakers.

Technology was deserted in Afghanistan; they have it. If they have mobile details, they are able to track you down to within metres. That's precisely what the unit did.”

During testimony about whether the Taliban had access to necessary encryption, the source stated: “They've got everything.”

Aftermath of the Data Breach

Preliminary research presented to the committee suggested that no fewer than forty-nine family members and associates of Afghans affected by the incident had been murdered.

A legal restriction about the leak was implemented in last year and restricted any information regarding the matter from being made public until July 2025.

Security Recommendations

Because she was restricted, the whistleblower and the volunteer organization associated with told individuals at risk they were working with that they had “concerns that certain devices had been breached”.

“We recommended that they relocate where feasible and switched their phone numbers. That constituted the two main details that, if authorities had access to these details, would cause them being traced,” the source testified.

Disputed Conclusions

Person A contested that internal investigation performed by a retired civil servant had been wrong to determine that the possession of the records by the regime was “unlikely to substantially change an individual's existing exposure”.

“The important fact is that affected people are in hiding from militant forces; they live secretly. Everything boils down to past work history.”

The source explained horrific violence experienced by at-risk Afghans, comprising electrocution, interrogation techniques, and severe beatings.

“Instances include toddlers who have had bones crushed to force households to say where someone is,” Person A stated.
