Preparations for Trump-Putin Summit Shelved Days After Budapest Talks Announced
Currently exist "no arrangements" for American leader Donald Trump to confer with Russian President Putin "anytime soon", a White House official has declared.
Last Thursday the US president stated he and the Kremlin leader would conduct negotiations in Budapest soon to discuss the war in Ukraine.
A planning session between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his opposite number Sergei Lavrov was planned for recently - but the administration stated the two had had a "productive" call and that a face-to-face session was no longer "necessary".
The administration declined to provide further information on the reason the negotiations had been delayed.
Previous Developments
The US president had discussed a Budapest summit during a call with Putin, a just prior to hosting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House.
Some reports claimed his meeting with Zelensky had been a "contentious discussion", with insiders indicating the president had pushed him to cede extensive regions of eastern Ukraine as part of a deal with Russia.
Nevertheless, on Monday Trump endorsed a peace initiative endorsed by Kyiv and European leaders to pause the hostilities on the present positions.
"Freeze the lines the way it is," he said.
Russia has frequently resisted against pausing the present battle positions.
The Russian government was solely focused on "permanent resolution", Russia's foreign minister stated on this week, suggesting that pausing conflict would only amount to a temporary ceasefire.
Political Perspectives
The "underlying reasons" of the hostilities demanded attention, the Russian diplomat said, using Russian diplomatic language for a range of maximalist demands that encompass the acceptance of full Russian sovereignty over the Donbas as well as the military reduction of Ukraine – a unacceptable proposition for Ukraine and its European partners.
The Ukrainian president commented talks regarding the current lines were the "start of negotiations" but that Moscow was "doing everything" to prevent dialogue.
He further commented the sole subject that could cause Russia to "take notice" was that of the supply of long-range weapons to the Ukrainian military.
Military Considerations
The Russian president's spontaneous discussion with the US leader recently preceded rumors that the United States was planning to provide extended-range cruise missiles to Ukrainian forces that could theoretically target inside Russia.
Zelensky asserted it was the Tomahawks issue that had compelled Moscow to engage in discussion. The talk about the weapons systems had proven to be a "valuable contribution" in international relations", he added.
