The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
