Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones flashing his middle finger at Jets fans, though he maintains he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team secured a decisive win.
“That was regrettable. It was essentially an interaction with our fans out in front of us,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “There was a large group of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, our fans. The entire stadium was brimming with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the signal was entirely accidental, occurring amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I simply showed the wrong finger,” he remarked. “The action was accidentally done. This is sincere. Should you call it unplanned, you can. However, it got resolved rapidly.”
Historical Precedent for Owner Fines
This is not the initial instance an league proprietor has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Previous cases include:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at spectators in January 2024.
- Former Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.
Jones, who is known for his publicity flair, reportedly has an estimated net worth of around $16bn, so the fine easily payable for the wealthy owner.
