Ben & Jerry's Founding Partner Claims Parent Company Prevented Palestine-Themed Frozen Dessert Flavor
One of the co-founders of the well-known frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has announced that corporate owner Unilever stopped the introduction of an innovative pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, that established the business alongside his partner, disclosed that he plans to independently develop this new product within a personal series highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's has been barred from speaking out about.
Longstanding Dispute Involving Founders and Corporate Owner
The recent announcement escalates the continuing tension between the internationally recognized ice cream maker and Unilever, the UK-based consumer goods corporation that acquired the ice cream brand since 2000.
Both founders have asserted how Unilever along with its ice cream arm Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's from "maintaining its activist principles".
The Fruit Flavor becoming a Symbol for Solidarity
The entrepreneur announced through social media how he's developing a new watermelon-flavored sorbet, requesting public suggestions for naming options plus additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder stated in his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for permanent peace in Palestine and calls for addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
The watermelon has become an emblem of support for the Palestinian people due to its colors, that mirror the colors in the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Activism and Recent Developments
Several years ago, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of their merchandise in territories under Israeli control, resulting in the parent company selling their Israel business to a local licensee, thereby permitting ongoing distribution within disputed territories.
This upcoming dessert series will be created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand which was first created several years back to support former political contender Bernie Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Back".
Management Shifts and Future Intentions
The founder revealed that he plans to develop additional frozen dessert varieties that address issues that Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly due to Unilever.
This development comes after co-founder Jerry Greenfield resigned his position at Ben & Jerry's in September, following many years with the organization, citing worries that the company's autonomy had been compromised following Unilever's decision to restrict its social activism.
Previously, Mr. Cohen stated that "Jerry has a really big heart and this conflict with our parent company was breaking it."
"My heart compels me to keep working inside the company to fight for its independence ensuring that it can fulfill the social mission, the values that it was founded on and has maintained for decades," he explained to media outlets.
