Adult Swim's Premier New Show of This Year Earns a Substantial Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
Last October, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the channel launched a fresh animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a animated take of a serene talk show. In an era often characterized by dark humor, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.
"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and helped it grow," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."
Executive Acclaim
The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and championed its distinctly quirky appeal.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about watching this charming family navigate their everyday routines.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its current sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.
“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
Future Seasons
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well catalyze that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to experience the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
